Master a good line and you can draw anything

Drawing of a chair in Atelier Valadon

Art like drawing always used to be a mystery to me. Right up until I learned that, as with all art, the best approach is to just do it. In my previous visits to Musee de Montmartre I learned from Suzanne Valadon to focus on the outline.

For my first holiday in three years I returned to Montmartre. Having lost touch with drawing, returning to it was challenging, but Suzanne was there to instruct me again. ‘Master a good line and you can draw anything’ she said. Perhaps my best work ever, this drawing of a chair demonstrates that: it's all lines and shading. That's all.
